This summer I worked on my first ever Shakespeare play. This being my first time getting paid to design. The show was apart of the Theatre Aspen Education program. The show was performed by the high schoolers at the summer camp in the John Denver Sanctuary. Due to the performance being in the park, and right in front of a river, I was limited in what I was able to do. Underscoring would simply be too loud. My design mainly consisted of transition music that set the tone for each scene. And the transition from one scene to another. Creating Shakespeare atmosphere without taking away from the actors dialogue.
This was also an interesting show to engineer because of the showing taking place in the park. This meant that I would have to build the system everyday and strive everyday. This was an interesting show to engineer due to being performed in the park. This meant that I had to rebuild the system and strike the system everyday. This was also my first time incorporating an interface into my sound system. My usual way of going about a system for plays has been to go straight from the mixer to the Slab computer. But for this system I went from the mixer to the interface to the slab computer. This allowed me to route each speaker separately, the system containing a Main L and Main R. This was a necessity as thIe Theatre Aspen Main Stage show Gypsy was occurring at the same place and the loud speakers I was using were also being used as Monitors for the band. A band conducted by Andy... Due to this I was not able to adjust the settings of the powered speakers. I made up for this my routing the speakers to separate faders. Feeding each of them different amounts of signal. based on the gain and eq that each speaker needed.
